Alpe
d'Huez, France |
|
This is fast becoming a resort to rival the best. The
village is more convenient than charming but the scenery
is outstanding and sure to keep photographers busy. The
recent growth in popularity is attributed to an increase
in quality chalets and big investment into the lift
system. Alpe d'Huez is a genuine all-rounder in all
aspects, runs to suit every level, good childcare,
plenty of party atmosphere and lots of on and off snow
activities.
On the
mountain
The massive sunny bowl surrounding the village
presents plenty of non-threatening runs for novices and
children so anybody can ski home. Most of the key areas
of the resort are linked by gondola, and accessed by
easy blues, as well as interesting reds, allowing groups
of mixed abilities to explore the area to it's full
potential and still meet up for lunch. There are some
better than average mountain restaurants to try, one of
the best being Les Arielles on the way to Oz. The really
steep stuff is mainly up on the Pic Blanc glacier, the
start to the bone shaking bumps of the ‘Tunnel' run and
the Sarenne, Europe's longest black run boasting
fantastic views.

On the town
Alpe d'Huez attracts sports enthusiasts year round
and has always been a key feature of the Tour de France,
so be it climbing, skating, cycling, ice driving,
swimming or parapenting the active can all work up an
appetite. The nightlife is full on too, with a
reputation for party bars and clubs, toffee-vodka has a
big following here! Eating out offers good value with a
range from home cooked French cuisine, traditional
specialities and plenty of fast food and international
restaurants too.
