Chamonix is a resort that this
writer for one finds
hard to get a handle on.
No matter how many times
I visit, and there have been many, Chamonix appears
to take on a different facade. How one perceives this resort can largely depend
upon who you meet when you visit the place. If,
for example, you meet one of the world's few true
ski experts, then a few hours and a few beers talking
to this person can lead you to believe that the
skiing at Chamonix is for experts only. Strictly
off limits to we less talented and adventurous souls.
I mean this boy
or girl (there are plenty of the latter in
the expert category in Chamonix) will be
hoopin' and hollerin' about his/her day at
Argentiere, dueling with the powder gods on
The Grandes Montets. La Flegere, also at
Argentiere will come up frequently as well
in any tale of daring do on the slopes.
One could be forgiven then for thinking that
Chamonix, and the valley that bears it's
name is strictly for experts. But that's
before you met Fred and Martha from Meridian
Mississippi. You recognize them by their
state of the art equipment and fashion, and
less than top drawer skill when wearing
thesame. None the less these two, and many
more like them, will be grinning from ear to
ear about their day on the hills above
Chamonix.

Valley
- Les Houches & Chamonix & Argentiere
There are several
ski-stations in the Chamonix region, much
renowned as the ‘Grand Master' in the ski
industry. Chamonix is not considered
convenient and a car is useful here to make
the most of the mountain home to some of the
worlds best off-piste. Not a place for the
faint hearted! As you'd expect for a resort
dominated by the mighty Mont Blanc the
scenery is impressive, the ski-ing and
boarding extreme and the partying hardcore!
