Another link in the
magnificent ski chain known as the Portes Du Soeil.
As a separate entity, the resort is a nice little
ski area for beginnes and struggling intermediates.
The 13 or so French resorts which
combine with a dozen Swiss Resorts to form the
smashing ski area known as the Portes Du Soleil.
Literally translated this means the doors to the sun.
well let me tell you, bro, that this collection of ski resorts is
the dorr to a tremendous lot of skiing too.
This particular resort is
situated at an altitude of 1172m and is skiable, in the immediate vicinity, to
2002m.
The immediate vicinity in this case includes Les Gets-Nyon and
Pleney, sort of a mini Portes Du Soleil, with its own lift pass.
The latter, naturally enough is cheaper than the “big picture” so
to speak, and is perfectly adequate for a lot of recreational skiers.
Not enough for you oh talented one? Then get
the big one. The Portes Du Soleil pass
entitles you to use more than 200 lifts, and
allows you to show your stuff on over 650km.
of prepared ski runs. Try that on your
average ski vacation. Let us have a little
closer look at the action right in the
immediate vicinity of the village shall we?
That which is covered in the sort of “mini
pass” we mentioned earlier. The highest
skiable point here is Chamossiere, at 2002
meters above the sea. This area is mostly
for better skiers, and the runs vary between
a moderately challenging re variety and a
very challenging black shade.
Blue only begins to show it’s forgiving head
when you get near the village of Nyon, about
three quarters of the way to the cable car
which leaves from there. Howeverthosae of
you based in Les Gets, and not harbouring a
wealth of talent and experience in your ski
belt should not dismay. Les Get is liberally
sprinkled with runs of the green variety,
which is to say, is as easy as it gets.
There are even blue runs leading over to
Nyon, via les Chavannes. No problem then for
less experienced skier. Better skiers will
do well to buy the full pass, but even if
you do not, there is enough challenge to be
found in the immediate vicinity.
Les Gets (pronounced Les Gey) is just one of
Les Getws is, if memory serves. Not one of
your resorts built only for skiing purposes.
The village is biggish, and has 12,000 beds,
mostly in apartments. However there are
enough hotels to accommodate those who
prefer them. Like me for instance. Prices
are not too bad either. A three star jobbie,
which is pretty good in France should set
you back about 620 FF for half board. To get
to Les Gets fly into Geneva auto route and
cut off at La Cluses.
