Combine them
with the Swiss/Franco Portes Du Soleil and you must rank them as among
the world’s top 5 areas. The
headline says it. These two
resorts, if they had to stand on their own offerings simply form a
skiing standpoint, would, without question rank as first rate in
anybody’s dictionary. After
all there is a heap of skiing to over 3,000m on the ski pass that only
serves Morzine/Avoriaz and immediate surrounds. The villages (if Morzine can be called one) are big enough
not only to offer the skiing potential, but to accommodate a wide range
of non skiing activities as well. Of
the two resorts Morzine is by far the largest.
Because of its altitude at around 1,500 Meters conditions often
permit skiing right to the
village.
Avoriaz
on the other hand is your classic, purpose-built resort tucked high
(1700m) in the mountains. Bustling
and busy, Avoriaz has got it all, whether for skiing, living, shopping
or just relaxing. Apartments, hotels, kindergartens, children’s play
and ski areas, wild and woolly skiing, gentle beginner’s skiing and
everything in between. What
can one say? Many people
who “look down” on purpose built resorts should come here and have a
look at what they achieved here. A
mountain city, a mountain resort from nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
Now here’s the big plus.
This
is all connected to the almost unlimited skiing offered on the whole
Portes Du Soleil. We are
talking Big! What’s our
definition of big ? Try 230
ski lifts, 650 kms of skiable terrain, 13 villages and two countries,
Switzerland and France. Big
enough? There is a ski pass covering just the Morzine/Avoriaz region,
or, if you are good enough, there is one which connects the whole ski
world mentioned above. Only
you know your abilities. A
six day pass will cost about FF 900 for adults this year for the
whole of Portes, with a good reduction for kids.
There
is also a sports pass available which includes the skiing above, ski
lessons, and unlimited public skating, we did not have prices at the
time of going to press. There
is a good selection of night life in each of these resorts, and most
other sporting opportunities that one associates with winter holidays
are also available. Geneva
is your best airport, follow the autoroute towards Chamonix and, turnoff
at cluses.
